Thomas Power

Union Organizer

Contact Me

I am a union organizer from New Hampshire living in Western Mass. After living in South America for 8 years where I learned the power of collective direct action, I started organizing unions throughout New England with the New England Joint Board UNITE HERE. Before I was in the labor movement, things like health insurance or a regular work schedule were off the table for me but now I feel like I can live in dignity. I have worked with hundreds of workers just like myself across the region win the same rights and dignity at work. When you form a union in your workplace, the days of the boss giving orders and you following them are over.

If your work place is in the food service, hotel, garment, textile, manufacturing, warehousing, laundry or hospitality industries in New England or New York, I want to talk with you.

What is a union?

A union is workers organization in the workplace that coordinates action so workers can bargain directly with management over all the terms and conditions of work. You aren't waiting for the government or the boss to give you a higher wage or better benefits but you are able to use direct action to bargain and win them with a legally enforceable union contract.

How do I form a union?

  • Talk with some of your coworkers about workplace issues you are having and make a decision to do something about it.
  • Contact a union organizer (me!) who will show you specifically the steps you need to take to form a union in your workplace and negotiate a first contract.
  • Put together a core group of people who are dedicated to forming a union. These will be your key people who will lead you to victory.
  • The committee will have 1:1 conversations with all of your coworkers to build an overwhelming majority of support for forming a union in your workplace.
  • Sign union authorization cards and when you have an overwhelming majority of support demand recognition of your union by management and file for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board- Vote yes!
  • Negotiate and ratify your first contact.

Where do I start?

Does it make sense to you to pull together with your coworkers and fight for better pay and working conditions? The first thing to do is to get in touch with me.

I am an organizer with the New England Joint Board UNITE HERE, a union representing food service, hotels, garment, textile, manufacturing, warehousing, laundry, and hospitality in New England and New York.

If your work place is in those industries, I want to talk with you. If you aren't you should still reach out and I can help you identify a union that you can organize with.
